Polcevera Viaduct - Work on the new viaduct in Genoa is almost complete

Less than two years after the disaster that killed 43 people, the construction of a new viaduct was build in Genoa. Today the last platform has been solemnly assembled and now the finishing works can be started.

The Prime Minister, who visited the construction site under the pillars of the new bridge, was accompanied by a small group of engineers and city officials in masks. The head of the Italian government praised the workers and remembered the victims who died two years ago. - Genoa is a model for all of Italy. Stitching this wound above us and our memories of the tragedy come at such a special time of danger - Conte said. He added that both the employees and the city authorities rolled up their sleeves to complete the construction by the planned date in the summer of this year.

On Tuesday 28th April, workers laid the last span connecting the banks of the Polcevera River. The flags of Italy and Saint George's red cross, symbol of the city, fluttered on the construction.

Hundreds of workers have been working on the construction site since January last year, who, despite the flood that ravaged this area at the end of last year, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic that is currently prevailing in Italy, which forced the authorities to abandon most construction projects, intend to complete construction on the planned date, i.e. until mid-July this year. Until then, finishing works such as pouring asphalt and lighting installation will be underway.

On August 14, 2018 Genoa's 1182-meter long central viaduct over the A10 motorway collapsed. At the time of the disaster there were about 30-35 cars and three trucks. The viaduct section fell from a height of about 50 meters. 43 people were killed.
