Germany: HD cameras will peek into truck cabins

The German state of Lower Saxony which includes Hanover, Bremen and Osnabrück and other cities, heralds a real war with the use of mobile phones behind the wheel. There will be special cameras on the roads that will check on drivers inside their cabins.

The system is to be targeted mainly at truck and delivery drivers. The cameras will work in high definition and it will allow to determine the use of a mobile or other electronic device. On those basis the police will issue fines and send them to the vehicle owners.

Lower Saxony has also announced that it will expand its information campaign against using mobile phones while driving. Banners need to be addressed to other road users, including people driving around cities and even to cyclists. They also tend to reach for electronics.
